From Campus to Community
This is excerpted from a SIC status and planning document provided to Chabot Administrators. In addition to the campus initiatives that SIC supports, the SIC team also is involved in a great deal of community outreach and project management. This document focuses on that aspect of the SIC mission.
We wanted to give you an update about status and plans for SIC work with the wider community as we move into the spring semester.
SIC as Hub for working with outside community, including city of Hayward:
One of the very exciting things SIC is doing is partnering with the city of Hayward on a set of initiatives and events in south Hayward, the Tennyson Corridor. In order to prepare ourselves to collaborate with Hayward, over the last semester, we have:
Attended all day training workshop put on by Pepperdine’s Davenport Foundation--the group whose grant is supporting this work
Attended Hayward Historical Society events to familiarize ourselves with Hayward history
Set up collaboration with CSUEB industrial engineering professor
Worked with Mary Thomas from Hayward to create a set of materials and resources to support the work
Organized Passion classes and several English classes around this work
SIC student assistants conducted research around different areas of inquiry including urban planning, community activism, participatory democracy, community mapping, and the like…
Created connections with UC Berkeley students who are also supporting this work, and have Urban Planning and Ecology as their majors
Created master calendar of activities and goals for the semester
SIC is involved in a wide variety of projects for the Tennyson Thrives Initiative:
“Secret Shoppers”--SIC students consulted for the city of Hayward about how the city can more effectively serve residents who have housing and renting issues.
SIC created a GIS Map that tells the story of South Hayward residents. The Map is housed on the city of Hayward’s website.
Over 100 South Hayward residents were interviewed this spring, and their stories told in essays and art works.
Over 50 Community Based Organizations were interviewed, and their stories told in essays and art works.
SIC presented a very well-received art show that was up for 2 weeks at the Hayward City Hall.
This art is slated to now be shown at Hayward libraries and art galleries.
SIC has Tabled at community events to share the work of SIC and to tout Chabot
SIC and Passion and Purpose are presenting a very ambitious community celebration on July 28th, the first annual Palma Ceia Fest.
In addition to the Tennyson Corridor opportunities, another related grant opportunity has to do with water justice and ecology in the Tennyson Corridor. This is being funded by the California Dept. of Water Resources. This grant will start in the fall, and we have some preparatory work to do:
Conduct initial research into the issues, especially keeping in mind how different disciplines at Chabot can intersect with this work in doing PBL.
Set up collaboration with Rising Sun Energy.
Set up collaboration with Environmental Coalitions for Water Justice.
