Earth Action in the Community

All communities are stakeholders

One of the clichés about colleges is that they are seen as isolated from the wider world in their "ivory tower." We might think this is not the case with community colleges given the word "community" sitting there in the description of the institution.

And yet TEA often hears faculty from community colleges across the nation rue the fact they feel cut off from the larger community and world that surrounds the school. This is an unfortunate situation. A college has much to offer the community, and the community has much to offer the college. And in this “All hands on deck” moment in planetary history, collaboration is the very best response to the Climate Crisis.

The TEA team supports faculty in moving beyond the classroom and engaging with the wider community in the service of initiatives that heal the planet and that improve the community.

The posts below offer a glimpse into a long running collaborative initiative between Chabot college and the city of Hayward that the TEA team spearheads. Over the duration of the 4-year long initiative, several thousand Chabot students have participated in Action Learning projects that address community issues of sustainability, resiliency,  equity and Eco justice, policing,  and much more.
